CBS Media Distribution Center

Project Details

Location: New York, NY

Project Description:

This twelve year project included designing and building the program origination and transmission areas for the CBS Broadcast Center. The most complex task was maintaining operations throughout the construction process.
The original plan included five construction phases, but through years of diligent planning, Phases 3, 4 and 5 were combined into one final phase. All of them were recently completed, and the space is now fully operational.
In 2010, Phase 1 was awarded Broadcast Facility of the Year by Broadcast Engineering Magazine.

Phase 2 involved the construction of two major rack rooms with over 300 racks; each room was designed with under-floor cooling and joined by two levels of cable trays. The human-occupied spaces were the subject of very thorough ergonomic and lighting studies to minimize the fatigue associated with critical monitoring.

In the final phase, additional technical spaces and support offices were completed as well as a feature wall displaying the timeline of CBS history from the past century.
